Absenteeism - the percentage of workers who are not in on work days for a given period
Absenteeism Formula
Number of staff absent during period x100
Number employed during period
Absenteeism:
- A significant cost
- Key to understand reasons (genuine or not)
- Often predictable
Tackling absenteeism:
- Understand the causes - Provide rewards for good attendance
- Set targets and monintor trends - Consider the wider issues of employee motivation
- Have a clear sickness and absence policy
Why use absenteeism?
It is calcualted so that it can be compared to previous years and allow the business to identify any changes or incentives that are needed to reduce it, such as piece rates, hiring enw staff, removing staff. This could reduce absenteeism as workers are more motivated to turn up
